What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for Kentucky?

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. The prelicensing course must consist of 20 hours per line of authority on the general principles of insurance for that line of authority. The lines of authority requiring a pre-licensing course are as follows:
  • Life – 20 hours
  • Health and Accident – 20 hour
  • Property – 20 hours
  • Casualty – 20 hours

How to get an insurance license in Kentucky

  1. Meet the general eligibility criteria
    • Be at least 18 years of age.
    • Maintain a principal place of residence or a principal place of business in Kentucky
    • Not have committed any act that is a ground for denial, suspension or revocation of a license

  2. Complete required prelicensing education
    • Prepare for the Kentucky State Licensing Exam by completing a pre-licensing course of study.
    • After passing the Exam Prep Course Certification Exam, you will be able to download a PDF Certificate of Completion which is valid for one year from the date of completion; you will need to take and pass your state exam within this timeframe. Certificates of Completion must be submitted to the DOI with a signature and date.

  3. Apply for criminal background check
    • Apply for Criminal Background Report online through the KY Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) at https://courts.ky.gov. Fees are paid online, and are not refundable.
    • All AOC requests are typically processed within 24 hours (except for weekends and state-approved holidays.)
    • The AOC criminal background report is valid for 60 days.

  4. Apply for a License
    • Complete and submit electronic application through www.nipr.com. When transaction has been completed, please allow up to 5 business days for DOI to review and process the application. 
    • Within 24 hours of application transaction, set up a KY eServices account in order to track the status of application, and schedule / reschedule examinations.

  5. Register and pass state licensing exam
    • Licensing exams are provided by the Kentucky Department of Insurance.
    • After you have received notification your application has been processed, schedule your examination online through your eServices account.

  • Per Kentucky PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the pre-license education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.
  • Students must pass the closed-book non-monitored Exam Prep Course Certification exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  • If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
  • WebCE suggest to then utilize Exam Tutor and Flash Tutor for further practice before your exam day.

What is the process to transfer an insurance license to Kentucky?

New residents who still hold an active license in their previous home state will not be required to complete pre-licensing education or take the license examination as long as:
  • The license being applied for is the same line of authority as in the previous state
  • The change is within 90 days of surrender of previous resident state license

What is the process to obtain a non-resident insurance license in Kentucky?

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a Kentucky agent license, without having to complete the pre-licensing education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they a currently hold an active license in their resident state for the same lines of authority for which they are applying. Filing a Complaint with the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary Education

To file a complaint with the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary Education, each person filing must submit a completed "Form to File a Complaint" (PE-24) to the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary Education by mail to Capital Plaza Tower, Room 302, 500 Mero Street, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601. This form can be found on the website at www.kcpe.ky.gov.

Student Protection Fund

KRS 165A.450 requires each school licensed by the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary to contribute to a Student Protection Fund which will be used to pay off debt incurred due to the closing of a school, discontinuance of a program, loss of license, or loss of accreditation by a school or program. To file a claim against the Student Protection Fund, each person filing must submit a completed "Form for Claims Against the Student Protection Fund". This form can be found on the website at www.kcpe.ky.gov.
