What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for New York?

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. The prelicensing course must consist of the following hours per line of authority:
  • Life – 20 hours
  • Health and Accident – 20 hour
  • Life, Accident & Health – 40 hours
  • Property and Casualty – 90 hours
  • Personal Lines – 40 hours

How to get an insurance license in New York

  1. Meet the general eligibility criteria
    • Be at least 18 years of age.
    • Maintain principal place of residence or business in New York
  2. Complete required prelicensing education
    • Prepare for the New York State Exam by completing a pre-licensing course of study.
    • To satisfy the requirements for your course, you will need to pass an Exam Prep Course Certification Exam with a 70% or greater.
    • After passing the Exam Prep Course Certification Exam, you will be able to download a PDF Certificate of Completion.
  3. Register and pass state licensing exam
    • Candidates have the option to register to take their exam online or at a physical location.
    • Exam reservations can be made at www.psiexams.com or by calling (855) 579-4637.
    • Bring two forms of current signature identification (a valid driver’s license, non-driver ID, passport, military ID, or employee ID card, credit card).
    Before making an exam reservation applicants should thoroughly review the State of New York Licensing Candidate Handbook. The Candidate Handbook and additional licensing information can be accessed by clicking on the Student Handbook button above.

  4. Apply for a License
    • After passing the exam, apply for your license by completing an application at www.dfs.ny.gov.
    • Certificate of Completion must be submitted to the Department with your application and retained in your records.
    • Before applying online, please allow 1 to 3 business days after passing the required examination.
    • Applications can be submitted without an appointment, but an appointment must be made 15 days from either the date an agency contract is executed with the insurance company or the first insurance application is submitted to the company.

What are the WebCE New York Insurance Exam Prep course requirements?

  • Per New York PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the pre-license education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.
  • Students must pass the closed-book non-monitored Exam Prep Course Certification exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  • If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
  • WebCE suggest to then utilize Exam Tutor and Flash Tutor for further practice before your exam day.

What is the access period for WebCE New York Insurance Exam Prep courses?

90 days from the date of purchase. One additional extension for an additional 90 days can be purchased for $50.

How often does WebCE report New York Insurance Exam Prep course completions?

WebCE does not report exam prep course completions as the New York Insurance Department does not require course completions to be reported.

Does WebCE supply a certificate of completion for New York Insurance Exam Prep courses?

PDF certificates of completion can be downloaded upon completion of the pre-license course. The certificate must be submitted to the Department with your application. The certificate is good for a lifetime.

What is the process to transfer an insurance license to New York?

New residents currently licensed in another state or have been licensed in another state may waive the education and exam requirements by submitting the New York resident license application with a currently dated Letter of Certification or letter of Clearance from the former home state. The Letter of Certification or Letter of Clearance must indicate that the applicant has been licensed in the areas of insurance that is being applied for in New York and that the license has been in good standing within the last 90 days.

New residents who move to New York from another state who hold a New York nonresident license will only be required to change their address on the New York State Insurance Department website and select New York as their home state. Or applicants may submit an address change form along with a written statement to switch the home state to New York.

What is the process to obtain a non-resident insurance license in New York?

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a New York producer license, without having to complete the pre-license education requirement as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state and hold an equivalent license for the same line of authority.
