What are the Insurance Exam Prep education requirements for West Virginia?

Individuals must complete a pre-licensing course of study for the lines of authority desired before taking any examination. The pre-licensing course must consist of 20 hours per line of authority on the general principles of insurance for that line of authority. The lines of authority requiring a pre-licensing course are as follows:
  • Life – 20 hours
  • Accident & Health or Sickness – 20 hours
  • Property – 20 hours
  • Casualty – 20 hours
  • Personal Lines – 20 hours

How to get an insurance license in West Virginia

  1. Meet the general eligibility criteria
    • Be at least 18 years of age.
    • Be a resident of or have principal place of business in West Virginia

  2. Complete required prelicensing education
    • Prepare for the West Virginia State Exam by completing a pre-licensing course of study.
    • To satisfy the requirements for your course, you will need to pass a closed-book monitored Exam Prep Course Certification Exam with a 70% or greater.
    • When making a licensing exam reservation, applicants will be required to present your Certificate of Completion at your licensing exam. After passing the Exam Prep Course Certification Exam, you will be able to download a PDF Certificate of Completion.

  3. Register and pass state licensing exam
    • Make an exam reservation at www.pearsonvue.com/wv/insurance or by calling Pearson Vue at (800) 274-2614.
    • Bring two forms of current signature identification (a valid driver’s license, non-driver ID, passport, military ID, or employee ID card, credit card) and your WebCE Certificate of Completion.

  4. Submit fingerprints
    • All first-time individual resident producer and adjuster applicants must be fingerprinted in order to become licensed
    • Schedule an appointment at an IndentoGo center through www.indentogo.com and select West Virginia, or call 1-855-766-7746. You must indicate that your fingerprints are to be sent to the West Virginia Insurance Commission. Obtain a receipt from IndentoGo center that contains a 12-digit TCN number specific to your fingerprint session. The TCN number is required to be submitted with the license application.

  5. Apply for a License
    • After passing your licensing exam and submitting fingerprints, complete the insurance license application online at www.nipr.com.

What are the WebCE West Virginia Insurance Exam Prep course requirements?

  • Per West Virginia PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the pre-license education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.
  • Exam Requirements: Self-Study exams are closed-book and must be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party. Monitors must not serve for examinations of family members, relatives, or dependents; employers or supervisors; employees or subordinates; partners, joint ventures, co-owners, or business associates; or for anyone in whom the monitor or instructor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination.
  • Students should pass the closed-book final exam with a score of 70% or higher.
  • If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
  • WebCE suggest to then utilize Exam Tutor and Flash Tutor for further practice before your exam day.

What is the access period for WebCE West Virginia Insurance Exam Prep courses?

90 days from the date of purchase. One additional extension for an additional 90 days can be purchased for $50.

New residents who still hold an active license in their previous home state may not be required to complete Prelicense education or take an examination as long as they meet the following requirements:
  • Licensed in a reciprocal state and applying for same lines of authority
  • Canceled former home state license within 90 days of applying in West Virginia
